Port Morris Waterfront Connections

The Port Morris study advances a vision for safer, more equitable access to the Harlem River in an area long constrained by heavy infrastructure. The plan identifies targeted public-realm interventions that reconnect upland neighborhoods to the waterfront and support future inclusive development.ProjectPort Morris Waterfront Connections

The Lower Concourse Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) is one of many sites in the South Bronx with a legacy of industrial contamination and strong potential for inclusive waterfront development. Its strengths lie in its strong transit connections and anchor institutions, like Hostos College.

Physically fragmented by highway interchanges, rail yards, and large-scale infrastructure, the area’s connections to the Harlem River waterfront and nearby neighborhoods like Mott Haven and Port Morris are limited and dangerous. Proposed development in the Special Harlem River Waterfront District created new urgency to resolve longstanding access and circulation issues.

MUD Workshop supported AKRF on the Step III BOA study by leading design and visualization for key pedestrian and traffic nodes, including the intersections of 138th Street at the Major Deegan and Bruckner Boulevard at Lincoln Avenue, both of which carry a high volume of fast-moving vehicular traffic. We developed detailed public realm strategies and illustrated site-specific interventions to improve safety, walkability, and bike access.

The final plan outlines capital recommendations to connect upland communities to the riverfront via pedestrian and bike paths and integrate with NYC DOT and City Planning efforts. Following plan completion, the BOA was designated, unlocking eligibility for state implementation funding.
