Suffolk County sought to enhance recreational opportunities and environmental stewardship through the creation of a Blueway Trail for non-motorized boating. Supported by funding from the New York State Department of State’s Environmental Protection Fund, the initiative aimed to link communities, celebrate waterfront culture, and expand public access along Long Island’s waterways.

MUD Workshop collaborated with Suffolk County and NPV to develop the Blueway Trail Plan, identifying and evaluating 20 waterfront sites for potential access improvements. Concept designs were prepared for each location, with attention to cultural context, environmental sensitivity, and accessibility. The team explored opportunities for boat launches, ADA-compliant access, and site-specific amenities that would encourage recreation while fostering ecological performance and stewardship.

The work led to $1,000,000 in implementation funding for the restoration, preservation and accessibility to the Mastic Shirley Conservation Area located on Long Island's South Shore. In collaboration with the Mastic Beach Conservancy, this funding will support recreation, education, and environmental stewardship through an interpretive center, trail network, and a kayak launch.
