Sunset Park is one of New York City’s most important historic industrial and maritime waterfront neighborhoods. Its mix of manufacturing and working waterfront uses has continually evolved since the rise and decline of Bush Terminal following the downturn of the maritime shipping industry in the 1960s.

The Vision Plan built on the neighborhood’s physical assets including rail infrastructure, piers and freight warehouses, and multi-tenant industrial lofts while emphasizing the need to create a safe, functional waterfront that serves both industry workers and nearby residents.

Sunset Park Composite Recommendations


Through extensive outreach with stakeholders, business owners, community groups, and local leaders, four guiding goals emerged: grow industrial jobs, maximize efficient goods movement through maritime infrastructure, support decarbonization, and balance neighborhood needs. The resulting framework identified investments in freight infrastructure, workforce development, integrated open space, sustainable industrial development guidelines, and waste-to-profit exchange networks to guide future policy and capital investment.
