The Fordham Plaza concept plan reorganizes circulation, vendors, and public space to help the plaza function more effectively as a major transit and commercial hub. The design creates clearer movement patterns and more flexible areas for daily use and programmed events.

Fordham-Hear of the Bronx


Fordham Plaza sits at the crossroads of major retail, cultural, and educational destinations in the Bronx, directly above the Metro-North Fordham Station and beside the heavily trafficked Fordham Road. Despite this centrality, its existing layout and operational constraints limit its ability to function as a welcoming public space and an efficient transit hub, diminishing its potential to serve as the true “Heart of the Bronx” that stakeholders envisioned for the site.

As part of a transdisciplinary team of architects, urban designers, and transportation planners, Shachi Pandey steered a collaborative planning and design process that included interviews, stakeholder meetings, public charrettes, and survey research to identify key challenges and opportunities. The resulting concept master plan reimagined Fordham Plaza as an iconic public destination by streamlining transit circulation, organizing vendors and concessions, improving maintenance and service access, and enhancing safety and visibility. The plan also created flexible spaces for events, markets, and cultural programming.
