The Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF) was created in 2011 by the New York State Attorney General’s Office and Department of Environmental Conservation from settlement funds obtained from ExxonMobil over the Greenpoint Oil Spill. Designed to address the environmental priorities of a Brooklyn neighborhood long overburdened by the oil and gas industry, the program required a transparent and accessible process to engage residents in long-term planning and decision-making.
Community Outreach
MUD Workshop was tasked with conceiving and launching an interactive digital platform to support outreach, information-sharing, and accountability. The platform organized decades of information into a graphic timeline and served as both a public repository of documents and a two-way communication portal between the community and State agencies. By providing a seamless interface for residents to access program details, track fund allocation, and contribute feedback, the platform facilitated community-driven decision-making that ultimately dispersed millions of dollars in environmental investments in Greenpoint, from grassroots tree plantings to larger investments like the Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center.
