Responding to a call to radically reinvent the ancient sukkah, the Bamboo Dunes installation invited reflection on themes of impermanence, protection, and connection to the more-than-human world.

Bamboo Dunes was conceived for Union Square’s Sukkah City as a temporary installation that reflects the dual origins of the sukkah: both as a celebration of nature’s bounty during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, and as a place of refuge during the Exodus. The design draws inspiration from the shifting desert dunes and the abundant volume of hay bales in a freshly harvested field, capturing both transience and sustenance.
Bamboo Dunes Site
Constructed from prefabricated plywood modules wrapped in a woven bamboo skin, the structure blurred distinctions between enclosure and openness. The installation invites visitors to reflect on vulnerability and abundance through a form that blurs enclosure, openness, and material lightness.
